The museum used to celebrate anniversaries with new exhibitions, publications and holidays for their admirers. But what a surprise: S.V. Zagraevsky, professor, Dr. of architecture from Moscow, dedicates to the anniversary of the Museum his book – "New researches of Vladimir-Suzdal museum’s architectural monuments". Dedicates and donates the edition of monumental, well-illustrated scientific publication. A pleasant gift! We gratefully accept it and recommend to our visitors, readers and admirers.

The white stone architecture of XII-XIII centuries – the most important architectural riches of Vladimir region and Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. Nothing attracts the admirers of Russian antiquity to Vladimir and Suzdal, as an opportunity to witness and feel great antiquity, originality and timeless beauty of white stone buildings – the Golden Gate, Assumption and St. Demetrius Cathedrals in Vladimir, Nativity Cathedral in Suzdal, fragments of the Prince's Palace and the Church of Intercession on the Nerl river in Bogolyubovo, the Church of Boris and Gleb in Kideksha.

That is in the Museum these pearls of Old Russian architecture with their unique advantages were involved and constantly continue to be involved in the cultural context of society, thanks to the Museum they were available, interesting and understandable for many people – adults and children, compatriots and foreigners, professionals and amateurs. Thanks to the Museum-Reserve these monuments in late 1992 were included in the List of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. A lot of effort, time and resources the Museum puts on scientific restoration of these unique temples, to the intent that they are saved as long and good as possible. In each of these monuments the expositions reveal the advantages and features of the buildings. Note that the successful examples of such monuments’ museification is little known not only in Russia but also in the world.

Thus, the Golden Gate has the popular military-historical exposition with diorama of Vladimir during the siege by the army of Batu Khan in 1238. In the Cathedral of the Assumption – the current church – the Museum holds at certain times its trips, paying special attention to famous frescoes of Andrei Rublev. In the Cathedral of St. Demetrius in 2005 a new exhibition of audiovisual programs, including word, church singing, dynamic illumination was opened. New exhibitions were opened also in two cathedrals of the Nativity of the Virgin – in Bogolyubovo and Suzdal. The Museum published a lot of popular books on white-stone architecture and its monuments, without which no guide, no tour gets along.

The scientific study of white stone architecture began since the middle of XIX century, the archaeological research was continued later in the XX century. In the middle of XX century, the fundamental work of N.N. Voronin “Architecture of North-Eastern Russia of XII-XV centuries” was published. But after this edition almost half a century has passed. During this time, there appeared the new research of white stone monuments, the new look at many circumstances of their history an architecture, the new formulation of old problems and new solutions. A contribution was made into these studies also by the Museum, through its research staff and scientists working in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Museum-Reserve keeps the unique white stone Lapidarium, which consists of archaeological, restoration, and sometimes just random finds. The Lapidarium was studied and published, and nearly a third of it is on display.

However, until now there was no publication, which could gather together all the new researches that were made over the years. This was done in the book by Moscow professor, Dr. of architecture S.V. Zagraevsky "New researches of Vladimir-Suzdal museum’s architectural monuments ". This book examines both the general issues of pre-Mongol history of the white stone architecture, and of the above-mentioned sites of the Museum. The book is represented by a completely new look at the construction of Yuri Dolgoruky’s time, otherwise than it was accepted before, the role of the prince in the history of the Suzdal principality and the white stone architecture was evaluated. Particular attention is paid to the organization and production of white stone, for which the author has visited many quarries near Moscow, and even gained the experience in the handling of white stone blocks.

In each of the Museum’s monuments the author found a field for its research activities. His keen analytical eye penetrated into such unexpected, but extremely important areas, which were ignored by many researchers (the first profession of the author – mathematician). Basing also on the discoveries and observations of other scientists, he managed to make them shine with his own analysis. In general, the author formed a conceptually new insight into many aspects of the history of the white stone architecture.
